Set VTL to sequential mode

jimmyjump
Hello,

MHVTL is a great piece of software.

I want to know if there is any way to set MHVTL to sequential or stacker mode?

Most SCSI libraries can be configured in either RANDOM mode where you can control the robotics and such with MTX or the backup software controls the library, then the libraries can also be configured in SEQUENTIAL or STACKER mode where when the first tape is written, the second tape automatically loads and so on.

This is useful in my environment and I am curious if this can be done with MHVTL.

Thanks
Jimmy

Sequential mode (stackers)..

I though about this when first starting out. However I couldn't find any documentation on these devices and haven't come across one for many, many years.

Hence I've never put any effort into implementing the behaviour.

If you have any doco on the operation, I'm more than happy to have a look.

No promises ;)

There are several features I'd like to add..
 - Customised delays (so performance is more like a real library/drive)
 - Finish up on the notifications.
 - Implement log pages (real data instead of fake data).

Cheers

Unfortunately I don't have any documentation on it myself either so I think we are stuck. It would be a nice feature but I can work around it.I recently had some experience with one of the major vendor deduplication appliances that provide VTL functionality and they don't offer stacker mode either so perhaps it's difficult or not a priority.

On a positive note..
I actually was pleasantly surprised by MHVTL performance recently. I have a box with a directly attached LTO library via Fibre Channel. On the same box I am using MHVTL on iSCSI attached disk. The performance between the two was nearly identical speed wise dumping directly to the FC attached library and to the MHVTL cartridge.

This software is pretty cool, thanks for the responses.
